Mother's Day Sleep Tip #4: Ask for Help

Remember how I said that my first sleep tip of the series (Your Sleep Is Not A “Luxury) would be the most difficult for most moms to follow?
I lied.

Asking for help is even harder. Because for modern moms, reaching out for help is perceived as a sign of weakness. Nothing could be further from the truth. The unreasonable demands placed on our shoulders are absurd. And our own propensity towards perfection and unfavorable comparisons to other moms tend to makes matters worse. Even if your mother raised 14, Harvard graduates while covering international war zones for the New York Times doesn’t negate your need for some help and support.

Hiring a babysitter or a mother’s helper so you can nap, go to the gym, rob a bank or meet a friend for a drink is crucial to staying sane. (maybe not the bank bit…but you get my point).
If funds are tight, set up a “baby swap” with another mom you trust. She would probably be thrilled to have another little one around to entertain her little one.

If the thought of “intruding” on someone else’s time for an hour or two makes you uncomfortable, try asking a friend or neighbor if they could do you the favor of picking up diapers, washing soap or a gallon of milk while they are at the grocery store.

Keep your eyes peeled for moms pushing strollers piled with library books. Chances are she would be happy to add your books to the heap, saving you months of accruing overdue fines.

As the mother of a 12, 10 and 6 year-old I have learned an inarguable truth. Either we can continue to do more with more help or we will have to do some major corner cutting if we are expected to do it all alone. Either of these options is fine. What isn’t so fine is the option that too many of us choose: Do more with no help. It just doesn’t add up.

So, this Mother’s Day, consider asking your spouse for what you really want: Help. It is by far the most important gift you can give to yourself and your family.
